DIY-Body Wash with coconut oil

I absolutely love coconut oil, so when i found a recipe that incorporates that into a body wash I was so excited !! It’s a process to make it, but it’s not really that hard. The end result is a phenomenally hydrating wash, that will leave you fresh and glowing. I use glycerin a lot in my DIY so it’s a great product to have on hand at all times. Check out this easy recipe:

You’ll need:

1 bar of soap (Dr Bronner’s Castile is great)

1/2 tbsp glycerin

4 cups water

1/2 cup pure coconut oil

Grate your soap of choice with a cheese grater

Put your grated soap in a large pot with the water, coconut oil and glycerin

Heat on medium heat until all of the soap is dissolved

When the soap is dissolved the water will look like murky dish water

Turn the heat off and cover overnight to set

When you return to your soap it will be very thick and jelly like, use a mixer or wisk to mix the soap to a smooth consistency

You can add up to two cups of water to get it to the consistency you like ( I added one extra cup of water for my liking)

You can then leave the soap for another 12 hours to ensure it is the right thickness

Use a funnel to put the body wash in an appropriate container (It makes a lot so you may need one container to store it and one to use in the bathroom )

This body wash does not lather like regular body wash because we have taken out the harsh sudsing agents but it still works well and it is healthy and great for your skin !!

DIY Shower Vapor Rub disks

vapor

The news so far has painted a grim picture of the flu epidemic and almost everyone in our house has had some form of cold. We keep ginger, lemons, honey and tea on hand to get us back to feeling one hundred. With having young kids we look for different ways to bring relief and these vapor disks work great. All you have to do is place them in the shower and the vapors will help with head and chest congestion.

You’ll need:

1 cup Baking Soda

1/3 cup Water

Essential oils; eucalyptus,rosemary and lavender

Muffin tin

Muffin liners

Add  baking soda to a bowl. Slowly stir in water until a thick paste forms (feels like putty). Spoon your mix into the liners in the muffin pan and bake for 20 minutes at 350. Add 15 drops of each essential oil to each disk.

Make sure to remove them from the liners before using them in the shower

Easy winter cold remedies DIY #1

As a mother of 4 I am always looking for natural ways to keep my family’s health intact. As winter approaches so do the sniffles and sneezes , and I make a batch of homemade cold medicine. It is simple and it does the job. I can even get my 7 year old to take it, I just add it to some spiced apple cider.

Take a jar of honey

Cut up one lemon and one lime

Slice half of a ginger stalk

Add the lemon, lime and ginger to the jar first , then pour honey over them

Make sure the jar or container has a lid

At the first sign of cold or flu symptoms add a teaspoon or 2 to a cup of tea and enjoy

You can store this in your fridge for the whole winter.

Quick,easy and effective !!

Ginger is often included in many herbal decongestants and can help to minimise the symptoms of respiratory conditions, colds and allergies.

Lemons and limes each contain most of the known vitamins and minerals, and are  both excellent sources of Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, potassium, folic acid,  flavonoids, and the phytochemical limonene, which increases the level of enzymes  that detoxify carcinogens. Limes also contain the rare Vitamin P and are the  best readily available source of Vitamin G.

Eucalyptus !!

Its getting colder outside so now is the perfect time to bring out  the winter remedies to have a safe and sniffle free winter. The first thing we need to do is make sure we have our humidifiers clean and ready to go. It is important to keep the air moist in the winter because circulated heat dries  and can cause everything from nosebleeds to dry skin. Another great thing in the winter is Eucalyptus. Ecualyptus is an amazing oil and is used in cough drops as well as vaporized chest rub. You can add this wonderful oil to a pot of boiling water to bring relief for stuffy noses and congested chests or just to ward off any winter time ailments. You can make your own chest rub by adding the oil to Shea Butter and coconut oil. To make this concotion you would slowly melt the shea butter and coconut oil down, remove from heat and add several drops of the eucalyptus while whipping the mixture to a soft consistency. Now you will  have something that is effective, but gentle enough to use on a baby. This is an amazing and effective leaf that is easy to use and very versatile. Keep checking back with us as we explore other ways to stay well for the coming months.
