Homemade Salsa

Its only appropriate that I add a Salsa recipe after my last blog on storing cilantro !! This would be a perfect gift. Its fast and easy and DELICOUS !! You can make this mild or spicy but either way, it will be great. Try this super simple and healthy recipe.

Recipe:

  • 4 lbs tomatoes
  • 1 large yellow onion, peeled
  • 1 green bell pepper
  • up to 3 small jalapeno peppers
  • 1 anaheim pepper 1 clove garlic
  • 1/3 bunch cilantro
  • 1 Tablespoon + 1 scant teaspoon salt
  • 1 Tablespoon + 1 scant teaspoon season salt
  • 1 Tablespoon + 1 scant teaspoon lemon juice (either fresh or bottled)
  • freshly ground black pepper

Core and roughly chop all produce. Remove seeds from peppers as desired. For milder salsa, remove all pepper seeds; for spicier salsa, leave some or all seeds in. Working in batches, use a food processor to chop tomatoes, onion, all peppers, garlic, and cilantro to desired size. I pulse mine until it’s just a little chunky. Pour salsa into a large bowl and add all seasoning and lemon juice. Refrigerate until needed. Makes 4-5 pints.salsa

How to store -Cilantro

I am a cilantro fanatic !! Im always finding recipes where I can incorporate it in the dish. Everything from eggs to nachos, I try to add cilantro. My problem was when I brought it home from the store if it wasn’t used quickly enough, It went bad. I was constantly buying it. So when I found this handy way to keep cilantro on hand, I was so excited. I bought some and it now sits in my window sill next to my aloe vera and basil plant. All you need to do is get a small bowl or glass and add your cilantro and a small amount of water to the bottom. That’s it, that’s all !!! Now you (and I) will always have this fresh tasting herb plant on hand !! cilantro

DIY-Lighten your hair with Cinammon

How EXCITED was I when I found this phenomenal way to lighten my hair. I have been thinking about it for a while, and really only wanted to lighten it a few shades. This easy to follow recipe is simple and you can leave it on 4 hours to over night. Cinnamon is a know skin irritant so if you feel any tingling or burning you will want to wash it out, but I would also suggest adding shea butter or olive oil to your scalp and hairline to make sure the mixture doesn’t come in contact with these sensitive skin areas. Check out the recipe below and enjoy !! cinnamon

Materials Needed:

  • Your Favorite Conditioner
  • Ground Cinnamon
  • Plastic Processing Cap
  • Honey (optional; has additional bleaching and moisturizing properties)
  • Time (Depending on preference;anywhere from 4 hours-overnight)
  • Soft bonnet hair dryer/heating cap (optional)

Step One: Prepare Cinnamon Mixture

Add the conditioner, cinnamon, and honey (if desired) together in a plastic container. The amounts needed are determined by the amount of hair you have. Make sure that you have added at least 3 tablespoons of cinnamon to make sure you get even color rather than streaks of color. However, it is okay to add more. Mix the contents together with a plastic spoon as metal can react with your mixture. Cover the mixture while you wash your hair.

Step Two: Shampoo/Co-wash and Condition Hair as Usual

Nothing new here. Wash and condition your hair as you normally would. It’s best to detangle your hair here rather than saving it for later. Braid hair in sections to prevent tangling during application of cinnamon mixture.

Step Three: Apply Cinnamon Mixture to Sectioned Hair

Applying the mixture to sectioned hair ensures that you are coating all the strands. Your hands are the only tools you need for the application. Since you detangled prior to it should be easy for you to finger-comb the mixture through your hair. Re-braid the section and move on to the next section. Complete this step over entire head. Cinnamon is a known skin irritant so it may tingle for a few minutes but it will go away. If the tingling persists or becomes unbearable, rinse it out immediately.

Step Four: Processing Time

There are a few options for this step. You want to treat this mixture like you would a deep conditioning treatment. Place the plastic processing cap over your hair. You can either sit under a bonnet dryer/heating cap for 30 minutes or you can wrap a warm towel around your head for 30 minutes. Another option is to just let your body heat do the work for you for the entire processing times. Whatever option you choose, the mixture should stay in your hair for at least 4 hours. The longer the processing time, the more results you will see. Therefore overnight is the best option.

Step Five: Rinsing the Mixture Out

Make sure you rinse the mixture out completely. The pressure from running water straight from the bath tub faucet can help in rinsing the majority of the mixture from your hair.

Step Six: Enjoy Your New Color

While you shouldn’t expect your hair to go from brunette to blonde, you can expect hair that is 2 shades lighter than your original color. The more applications you do, the more change you will see.

DIY Dishwasher Liquid

How excited was I to find this awesome easy recipe for DIY Dishwasher Liquid !!! It uses ingredients that are easily found and my favorite…Castile Soap from Dr Bronners. You will need a spoon and a container to store your liquid. You can even use your old dishwasher liquid container if you still have it. Check out this great recipe!!

  • 8 cups of water (divided)
  • 1 cup of Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
  • 1/2 cup Borax
  • 1/4 cup of Castile Soap (Dr. Bronner’s)
  • Pot
  • Spoon
  • Container
  • Measuring Spoons

Directions:

Bring 4 cups of water to a boil…While waiting for water to boil get your other ingredients measured out in the cups. After the water has started to boil, remove it from heat and begin to pour your Washing Soda, Borax, and Castile Soap and stir it until in dissolves.  It will look like really hot soapy water!!

Cover the pot with a lid and let it set overnight!  You could also move it to a
container that allows you to pour easily.  I let mine set in a plastic pitcher
after it had cooled in the pot for an hour or so.  As it cools it will gel up a
bit, just take your wooden spoon and break up the clumps and it will liquefy
considerably.

Mix it up really well and use a funnel to pour it into your container, and ADD
your remaining 4 cups of water. DONE !!!

EFT-Emotional Freedom Technique

Many years ago I had a friend who introduced me to EFT therapy. It was simple yet effective. It is an accupressure therapy that can help with food cravings, pain, negative emotions and just to feel better overall. During this busy time of year its a great time to take some time for yourself. This is a way you can reboot yourself and you can do it anytime, anywhere !! By using certain pressure points on your body, you basically tap the location while chanting a mantra of positivity. For example…. a proper EFT phrase will state, Even though I have (whatever issue you have) I deeply and completely love and except myself. Tap the location 5-10 times while stating the phrase, take deep breaths while tapping and keep water on hand. Closing your eyes helps you to stay centered and focused . You can use this technique as many times a day as you feel necessary to rid yourself of the issue. From headaches to emotional pain, EFT is a great technique that can help.

Example EFT Session:

EVEN THOUGH I HAVE FEAR OF PUBLIC SPEAKING I DEEPLY AND COMPLETELY LOVE AND ACCEPT MYSELF

The pressure points are as follows:

Top of the head: Use gentle pressure to tap with the tips of fingers using both hands

Eyebrow: Tap right above the hair of your eyebrows

Side of the eye: Tap at the temple with both hands

Under the eye: Tap gently under the bone with both hands

Under the nose: Tap gently under the nose with one hand

Chin: Tap gently with one hand

Collar bone: Tap gently with both hands under the clavicle bone

Under the arm: Tap gently with both hands at an angle to your sides at about 4 inches below your armpit

Wrists: Use wrist on wrist tapping

Side of Hand or Karate Chop point: Use four fingers to tap gently on this area
